Cowbridge 43 – 26 Pentyrch
On 25th April Pentyrch RFC were the last opposition and they came on a glorious sunny day in numbers with a strong second team too.
The seconds now rebranded as Cowbridge Bulls , with stalwart Jamie Bennett captaining the side played first. Cowbridge fielded a young team and it was a steep learning curve for them but with a good crowd they settled in and played some exciting rugby . We hope they have a taste for more and fixtures like this can arranged next season. Final score 17-54
The firsts game was exciting from the start . Robbie Brown was back in the centre , after a 5 month break , with his regular partner James Jones , and set up the first try for outside half Ioan Williams . Pentrych worked their No 8 over in the corner before at the midpoint prop George Thomas slipped a pass to captain Adam Dix to dummy his way to the try line. Williams added the extras. Pentyrch RFC hit back with a try and a penalty to make it 14-15 at half time.
Changes were made at half time and with Cowbridge on top at the scrum, Dix scored from an advancing scrum and did the same on 12 minutes with Williams adding both conversions. Replacement centre Owen Francis broke clear of the defence before passing to wing Rhydian Bailey to score in the corner. Pentyrch RFC second row crashed over for a converted try making it 33-22. Williams added a penalty and then with 10 minutes left from another strong scrum Brown committed defenders to release Williams to dive over and score. Final score 43-29
An excellent game to finish the season and a credit to both teams. There were some fine performances but no one could argue with Man of the Match going to Ioan Williams with 2 tries, 5 conversions and a penalty. Da Iawn Pav.
Afterwards in the sunshine both sets of players and supporters drank and sang for some time. Thanks go to the committee, Chris Rees and the fabulous bar staff. To The Farmers Pantry for the delicious food and club band No Direction for singing into the night.
We also thank The Star, and in particular Phil Irwin, for covering not only the rugby but the notices important to the community.
Finally players, members and guests look forward to the club dinner on 15th May with guest speaker Shane Williams , compered by John Paul Davies . It should be a great end to the season
